Massage has been used throughout history and is probably the oldest form of medical treatment as well as being regarded as a form of relaxation.

Massage works in two main ways:
Firstly, mechanically by physically moving the soft tissues and muscles of the body which creates numerous physiological changes such as improving circulation, tissue softness and flexibility.

Secondly, as a Reflex action where massaging one part of the body can affect another part of the body.

The main aims of massage may be to bring about:
1. A Specific effect, such as the treatment of an injury by Sports massage.
2. A Non-specific effect which focuses on general enhancement of physical, mental and spiritual well-being, used in Body or Swedish massage.
